Stem and leaf diagrams: mode, median, range

A stem and leaf diagram is a way of displaying a data set that shows the range of data in tabular form. Each data point is split into two parts, often splitting the first digit (the stem) from the remaining digit or digits (the leaf). This allows for a graphical division of the data into groups based on stems, with individual data points distinguished by their leaves. Stem and leaf diagrams can also be used for decimal numbers by splitting on the decimal point.

Stem and leaf diagrams make it relatively easy to find the mode, median and range for a data set. To find the mode from a stem and leaf diagram, look for the leaf value that appears most often in one row (do not count leaves from different rows as these are not the same value). The modal value is the most common leaf within one row combined with the stem according to the rule given by the diagram key.

To find the median value in a stem and leaf diagram, you should ensure that the diagram is ordered (stem values ascending from top to bottom, leaf values ascending from left to right). Then, count all the leaves in all the rows, and divide that number + 1 by 2. So if there are 15 leaves, the median value is at position (15 + 1) / 2 = 8. Count along all the leaves to the eighth leaf and read off the value as above by combining it with the stem value. If the median position falls between two leaves, calculate the median leaf value by adding the two values and dividing by two before combining it with the stem value.

To find the range of a stem and leaf diagram, take away the smallest value (stem and leaf) from the largest value (stem and leaf).

Sow grow is a gentle game that concentrates on your ability to answer math questions. The game itself is very simple to play and does not require manual dexterity or fast reaction times. You are growing sunflowers in pots on a window sill. When you answer questions correctly you get to pick a sunflower to put in the vase. When the vase is full, you have completed the game.

Notes

  1. Sow grow is a one player game to learn or revise math.
  2. Sow grow is a timed game - play a few times, set a personal best time and try to get on the leaderboard!
  3. It is best to go through the sample questions in the topic lesson before you attempt this game.

  1. Select the Sow grow game from the "Games" selection page.
  2. On the settings page there are brief instructions on how to play.
  3. Click on PLAY to start the game.
  4. The game is timed - the clock starts when you enter the play screen.
  5. The first seeds are planted then the first math question is revealed above the pots.
  6. If you have robot speech enabled, the robot voice will speak the question.
  7. Click / tap on the speaker button at top right if you want to hear the audio repeated.
  8. Click / tap on the question box to expand the question and hear the audio repeated.
  9. Click / tap on the pot that correctly answers the question.
  10. If your answer is correct the seedling will grow into a flower which is then cut and put in the vase.
  11. If your answer is wrong, the audio will play again, and an arrow will indicate the correct answer. Click the close button at top right to continue.
  12. The number of questions you need to answer is in the count box at top right above the clock.
  13. There are occasional "flower bonuses" available which will take 5 seconds off your time.
  14. A leaderboard records the 10 fastest times for each topic. Click the gold star on the vase to see the leaderboard.
  15. If you get one of the 10 fastest times, you are offered the chance to enter your name into the leaderboard, or you can cancel if you are not interested.
