How to round decimals to 1 decimal place (1 dp)
Rounding is a helpful technique that makes numbers simpler and easier to work with. By rounding, we find a number that's close to the original number but not as precise. This makes it more convenient for estimating and solving problems.
When rounding decimals to the nearest tenth (1 decimal place, 1 dp), we look at the second decimal place (the hundredths column) to help us decide if the first decimal place (the tenths) should stay the same or go up by one. The rules for deciding are:
- If the second decimal place (hundredths) is 5 or greater (5, 6, 7, 8, or 9), round the first decimal place (tenths) up by one.
- If the second decimal place (hundredths) is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4), the first decimal place (tenths) stays the same.
For example, what is 3.24 rounded to 1 decimal place?
Look at the second decimal place (hundredths): it's 4, which is less than 5. So, the first decimal place (tenths) stays the same. The rounded number is 3.2.
What is 7.681 rounded to 1 decimal place?
Look at the second decimal place (hundredths): it's 8, which is 5 or greater. So, we round the first decimal place (tenths) up by one. The rounded number is 7.7.

How to play UXO to practice
'Round to 1 decimal place' for 4th grade
UXO is a "click to clear" game with targets to hit and bombs to avoid.
- In each level of UXO, hit all the target objects.
- You can clear targets by clicking on them or by dragging over them with the mouse down.
- You have 30 seconds in each level to clear the targets.
- There are 10 levels max in the game.
- In the first level there are 10 targets and 5 bombs.
- The number of targets increases by one in each level.
- You get 10 points for each target you hit.
- You lose 5 points for each bomb you hit.
- When you have hit all the targets or 30 seconds have elapsed, you get a math question from your selected topic.
- Answering the question correctly adds 50 points to your score.
- A wrong answer takes 20 points away from your score.
- If you get a question wrong, you can try to answer again.
- Your final score is a combination of your targets score minus your bombs score plus the points you get from the math questions.
- There is a high score leaderboard for each topic.
- The highest possible score for a 10 question topic is 1950.
