'Polarity, strength of correlation' for 8th grade

Polarity and strength of correlation for scatter graphs

Scatter graphs use dots or diagonal crosses to represent values that correlate the relationship between two variables. The scatter graph will indicate the degree to which the two variables are correlated (linked or related).

For instance, a scatter graph plotting altitude (x-axis) against Oxygen concentration (y-axis) will indicate a strong correlation between these two variables because Oxygen concentration reduces with altitude (the reason climbers can suffer from altitude sickness). On the other hand, a scatter graph plotting eye colour against exam results will show no correlation because these two variables have no causal relationship.

The polarity of a correlation can be characterised as "positive" or "negative". This indicates whether an imaginary straight line drawn through the points (a line of best fit) rises to the right (positive - as the x-axis variable increases, so does the variable on the y-axis) or falls to the right (negative - as the x-axis value increases, the y-axis variable decreases). So, thinking about our example of altitude plotted against Oxygen concentration, we will see a negative correlation because the concentration decreases as the altitude increases. A positive correlation would be seen if we plotted a child's age against shoe size: as their age increases, so does their shoe size.

The strength of a correlation can be characterised as "strong" or "weak". A strong correlation will be indicated on a scatter graph by points that closely follow a line of best fit. A weak correlation will show points that are more loosely concentrated around a line of best fit.

In this topic you are asked to decide which of the descriptions provided best describe the correlation between the variables plotted on the x and y axes. The possible options are:

  • Strong positive correlation
  • Strong negative correlation
  • Weak positive correlation
  • Weak negative correlation
  • No correlation

With our Sow grow math game you will be practicing the topic "Polarity, strength of correlation" from 8th grade / Statistics / Two variables / Two variables. The math in this game consists of 16 questions that ask you to identify the polarity and strength of any linear correlation for each of the given scatter graphs.

Match math questions to the right answer to grow flowers...relaxed game with nice outcome

Large thumbnail for math game Sow grow

Sow grow is a gentle game that concentrates on your ability to answer math questions. The game itself is very simple to play and does not require manual dexterity or fast reaction times. You are growing sunflowers in pots on a window sill. When you answer questions correctly you get to pick a sunflower to put in the vase. When the vase is full, you have completed the game.

Notes

  1. Sow grow is a one player game to learn or revise math.
  2. Sow grow is a timed game - play a few times, set a personal best time and try to get on the leaderboard!
  3. It is best to go through the sample questions in the topic lesson before you attempt this game.

  1. Select the Sow grow game from the "Games" selection page.
  2. On the settings page there are brief instructions on how to play.
  3. Click on PLAY to start the game.
  4. The game is timed - the clock starts when you enter the play screen.
  5. The first seeds are planted then the first math question is revealed above the pots.
  6. If you have robot speech enabled, the robot voice will speak the question.
  7. Click / tap on the speaker button at top right if you want to hear the audio repeated.
  8. Click / tap on the question box to expand the question and hear the audio repeated.
  9. Click / tap on the pot that correctly answers the question.
  10. If your answer is correct the seedling will grow into a flower which is then cut and put in the vase.
  11. If your answer is wrong, the audio will play again, and an arrow will indicate the correct answer. Click the close button at top right to continue.
  12. The number of questions you need to answer is in the count box at top right above the clock.
  13. There are occasional "flower bonuses" available which will take 5 seconds off your time.
  14. A leaderboard records the 10 fastest times for each topic. Click the gold star on the vase to see the leaderboard.
  15. If you get one of the 10 fastest times, you are offered the chance to enter your name into the leaderboard, or you can cancel if you are not interested.
