'Grouped frequency table: modal group, range' for 8th grade

Grouped frequency tables: modal group, largest range

Continuous data can be represented in a "Grouped frequency table" where each class (group) covers the data points within a certain range, and the classes together cover the entire range of the data.

The benefit of grouped frequency tables becomes clear when there are so many raw data points that discrete values would become difficult to process. A limitation of continuous data is that individual data points are lost so that exact calculations of the mode or range of the original discrete data points becomes impossible. Instead techniques have been developed to approximate these values for continuous data.

Instead of a mode (the most frequent individual value in a data set), we can find the "modal group" which is the class of data that has the highest frequency. So if we have a grouped frequency table with classes 1-20, 21-40 and 41-60 that have frequencies of 12, 7 and 5 respectively, then the modal group is 1-20 because it has the highest frequency of 12.

Instead of an absolute value for the range of a data set, we can find the "largest range". This is the difference between the largest possible value in the biggest class and the smallest value in the smallest class. So if our grouped frequency table has classes 21-40, 41-60 and 61-80, then the largest range is 80 minus 21 which is 59.

In this topic you are asked to find either the modal group or the largest range for a series of grouped frequency tables. There are 8 question/answer pairs in the lessons, and an additional 8 question/answer pairs in all the games and tests.

With our UXO math game you will be practicing the topic "Grouped frequency table: modal group, range" from 8th grade / Statistics / Continuous data / Continuous data. The math in this game consists of 16 questions that ask you to identify the modal group or largest range for each grouped frequency table.

UXO is a click to clear game with multiple targets at different levels

Large thumbnail for math game UXO

UXO is a fun game to learn math where you attempt to knock over all the target objects while avoiding clicking / tapping on the bombs.

After each level, win an additional 50 points by correctly answering a math question from your selected topic. Wrong answers lose you 20 points but you can answer multiple times. Each level lasts 30 seconds: if you haven't cleared all the targets in that time, you lose 50 points. High scores can be added to the UXO leaderboards.

Notes

  • This is a fast-paced game of clicking or dragging over moving targets.
  • Also suitable for tablets and mobiles (it's actually easier than with a mouse)
  • Answer math questions correctly for a higher score
  • Hit all the targets in 30 seconds or you lose points.

Free Math Games screenshot of the UXO game for secondary

UXO is a "click to clear" game with targets to hit and bombs to avoid.

  1. In each level of UXO, hit all the target objects.
  2. You can clear targets by clicking on them or by dragging over them with the mouse down.
  3. You have 30 seconds in each level to clear the targets.
  4. There are 10 levels max in the game.
  5. In the first level there are 10 targets and 5 bombs.
  6. The number of targets increases by one in each level.
  7. You get 10 points for each target you hit.
  8. You lose 5 points for each bomb you hit.
  9. When you have hit all the targets or 30 seconds have elapsed, you get a math question from your selected topic.
  10. Answering the question correctly adds 50 points to your score.
  11. A wrong answer takes 20 points away from your score.
  12. If you get a question wrong, you can try to answer again.
  13. Your final score is a combination of your targets score minus your bombs score plus the points you get from the math questions.
  14. There is a high score leaderboard for each topic.
  15. The highest possible score for a 10 question topic is 1950.
