'Identify square numbers' for 4th grade

Identifying square numbers

Identifying square numbers involves recognizing numbers that are the result of multiplying a whole number by itself which is called squaring a number. Mathematically, it can be represented as n², where n is an integer.

To identify square numbers, you can follow these steps:

  1. Start with a given number.
  2. Take the square root of the number. The square root of a number is the value that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number. For example, the square root of 25 is 5 because 5 x 5 = 25.
  3. Check if the square root is an integer. If the square root is an integer, then the given number is a square number. If not, it is not a square number.
  4. If the square root is an integer, you have identified a square number.

Here's an example: consider the number 36.

  1. Take the square root of 36. The square root of 36 is 6 because 6 x 6 = 36.
  2. Since the square root is an integer, we can conclude that 36 is a square number.

The first 10 square numbers are:

  • 1² = 1
  • 2² = 4
  • 3² = 9
  • 4² = 16
  • 5² = 25
  • 6² = 36
  • 7² = 49
  • 8² = 64
  • 9² = 81
  • 10² = 100, and so on

You can continue this process to identify other square numbers by taking the square root of different numbers and checking if the result is an integer.

In this topic you are asked to recognize or calculate square numbers up to 144.
