Convert between exponents and expanded form
An exponent is a number raised to a power. 2³ is an exponent as is 4⁴. In 2³, the number 2 is called the base and the ³ is the power.
The expanded form of an exponent is the base multiplied by itself the number of times indicated by it's power.
For example: 3³ (exponent) = 3 x 3 x 3 (expanded form)
To derive the expanded form from the exponent, lay out the base multiplied by itself the number of times indicated by the power. Here are some examples:
8³ (exponent) = 8 x 8 x 8 (expanded form)
11⁴ (exponent) = 11 x 11 x 11 x 11 (expanded form)
21⁵ (exponent) = 21 x 21 x 21 x 21 x 21 (expanded form)
To derive the exponent from the expanded form, take the number being multiplied as the base, and use the number of times it has been multiplied as the power. Here are some examples:
6 x 6 (expanded form) = 6² (exponent)
7 x 7 x 7 (expanded form) = 7³ (exponent)
4 x 4 x 4 x 4 (expanded form) = 4⁴ (exponent)

How to play Sow grow to practice
'Convert exponents to expanded form' for 6th grade
- Select the Sow grow game from the "Games" selection page.
- On the settings page there are brief instructions on how to play.
- Click on PLAY to start the game.
- The game is timed - the clock starts when you enter the play screen.
- The first seeds are planted then the first math question is revealed above the pots.
- If you have robot speech enabled, the robot voice will speak the question.
- Click / tap on the speaker button at top right if you want to hear the audio repeated.
- Click / tap on the question box to expand the question and hear the audio repeated.
- Click / tap on the pot that correctly answers the question.
- If your answer is correct the seedling will grow into a flower which is then cut and put in the vase.
- If your answer is wrong, the audio will play again, and an arrow will indicate the correct answer. Click the close button at top right to continue.
- The number of questions you need to answer is in the count box at top right above the clock.
- There are occasional "flower bonuses" available which will take 5 seconds off your time.
- A leaderboard records the 10 fastest times for each topic. Click the gold star on the vase to see the leaderboard.
- If you get one of the 10 fastest times, you are offered the chance to enter your name into the leaderboard, or you can cancel if you are not interested.
