4th grade / Place value / Identify the place value / 5-digit number: tens
Each digit in a number has a specific place name and value depending on its position. In our base-10 numeral system, the place values are units, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. We read these place values of a number from right to left, starting with the units.
For example, consider the 5 digit number 48,925
To locate the tens digit of a 5 digit number, first find the units place by looking at the last digit on the right. The tens digit is the next digit to the left. In our example above, the tens place is occupied by the number 2.
To get the value of the tens digit, simply multiply that digit by 10. In our example above, the value of the tens digit of 48,925 is:
48,925 : value of tens digit : 2 x 10 = 20.
Here are some more examples of how to get the tens place value of 5 digit numbers:
The value of the tens digit of 97,372 is 70
The value of the tens digit of 81,043 is 40
The value of the tens digit of 28,407 is 0
This topic asks you to work out the value of the tens digit in a series of 5 digit numbers.
With our Mix and match math game you will be practicing the topic "5-digit number: tens" from 4th grade / Place value / Identify the place value. The math in this game consists of 20 questions that ask you to identify the value of the tens digit in each of these five-digit numbers.
In this game we are in a room with lots of toys - and the room needs clearing up - you need to put the play blocks back in the right boxes to tidy the room and win the game...but which is the right box for each block? Well, you can work that out by comparing the question on the block with the math answer on each of the boxes - you should drag the question block into the box whose math answer matches the picture question.
You can listen to the spoken math answer by clicking on the individual boxes. There are 5 blocks to clear up - but if you put them in the wrong boxes, there will be more... Anyway, tidy is good and practicing math is better so start now and see how you get on...
This game reinforces the math you learned or revised in the lesson by asking you to match each question to the correct answer. If you are older you may not like the childish reference to toys, but don't worry - there are other games to play, and who knows - you might like a trip down memory lane?
UXO * Duck shoot * The frog flies * Pong * Cat and mouse * The beetle and the bee
Rock fall * Four in a row * Sow grow * Choose or lose * Mix and match
There are 5 blocks that need putting away to tidy the play room. Drag (they are heavy...) the blocks to the correct boxes.
