Tens place value in 5 digit numbers
Each digit in a number has a specific place name and value depending on its position. In our base-10 numeral system, the place values are units, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. We read these place values of a number from right to left, starting with the units.
For example, consider the 5 digit number 48,925
- The units position is occupied by the number 5
- The tens position is occupied by the number 2
- The hundreds position is occupied by the number 9
- The thousands position is occupied by the number 8
- The ten-thousands position is occupied by the number 4
To locate the tens digit of a 5 digit number, first find the units place by looking at the last digit on the right. The tens digit is the next digit to the left. In our example above, the tens place is occupied by the number 2.
To get the value of the tens digit, simply multiply that digit by 10. In our example above, the value of the tens digit of 48,925 is:
48,925 : value of tens digit : 2 x 10 = 20.

Our CHOOSE OR LOSE game asks the learner to click on the correct answer from a selection of possible answers before the clock runs down.
- Click on PLAY to start.
- You are presented with a topic question, then a list or grid of 2 to 4 possible answers (depending on the topic you have chosen).
- You must select the correct answer by clicking on it before the clock counts down.
- You have 10 seconds in total to answer each question.
- The clock starts ticking down 5 seconds after the answers have appeared.
- To hear the question again, click / tap on the question box.
- The browser will speak the potential answers on rolling-over them.
- A correct answer gains you 10 points.
- A wrong answer loses you 2 points.
- A time-out loses you 5 points.
- A score is kept of correct answers against number of answers.
- The game is timed, and your final score (points earned minus time taken) is given at the end of the game. Top 10 scores for a topic get you a place on the leaderboard.
