Mixed fractions of quantities
for 4th grade

Use the formal method for multiplying fractions to expand these mixed fractions of quantities

Mixed fractions of quantities

Calculate mixed fractions of quantities by multiplying the whole number and the fraction parts separately

Multiplying mixed fractions by integer quantities can be achieved in several different ways. This topic "Mixed fractions of quantities" teaches you how to do so by multiplying the whole number part of the mixed fraction by the integer quantify first, then multiplying the fraction part of the mixed fraction by the quantify, then adding the two parts.

For example,

6 x 2½ = (6 x 2) + (6 x ½)

The second part (multiplying fractions by integer quantities) we have covered separately with our topics "Unit fractions of a quantities" and "Proper fractions of quantities". This topic "Mixed fractions of quantities" requires answers to be provided as the intermediate step in the process prior to adding the 2 terms together.

(6 x 2) + (6 x ½) = 12 + 3

Obviously you can then simplify the answer by adding the 2 terms:

12 + 3 = 15

Below is a table showing the first 6 question answer pairs for the topic "Mixed fractions of quantities" as used in the lessons for this topic. Our games and tests for the topic use these 6 items plus 10 additional question answer pairs.
