6th grade / Number / Powers & Roots / Squares and cubes / Identify square numbers
A square number is a number that is produced by multiplying an integer by itself. Examples of square numbers include 4, 9, 16, 25, etc. The smallest square number is 0 since 0 x 0 = 0. The number 1 is also a square number since 1 x 1 = 1.
The easiest way to know if an integer is a square number is to use the square root function on your calculator... If the answer is an integer, then the input is a square number. Interestingly, square numbers always end in the digits 0, 1, 4, 5, 6 or 9. Square numbers are always positive since multiplying two negative numbers together always gives a positive answer.
