With our Four in a row math game you will be practicing the topic "Best price - divide by 9" from 5th grade / Multiply + Divide / Best Price. The math in this game consists of 14 questions that ask you to use division by 9 to work out the saving made by purchasing a packet of 9 rather than individual items.

Learn how to work out saving per item by buying a packet or box rather than individual items
In these math topics, we explore division by working out what the price per item is if you buy a whole pack or other group container like a box or a book (of stamps). Often retailers will price a group of items in a box or packet at less per item in order to sell a greater quantity of items.
For instance, buying individual marbles might cost 10 ¢ each, but buying a packet of 10 marbles might cost say 80 ¢. In this case, you can probably see immediately that the pack price is "better" than the individual price, but how can we work out what the acutal saving is? There are 2 simple ways to work out the saving: either multiplying the individual item price by the number of items sold in the packet, or dividing the packet price by the number of items in the packet. If we do the latter we find that the price of each marble in the packet is
80 ¢ ÷ 10 = 8 ¢
Which compares to 10 ¢ if we buy the marbles individually. So in this case the saving ** per item ** (which is what these topics are about) is:
10 ¢ - 8 ¢ = 2 ¢
Next time you are in a shop where you can choose to buy a packet or individual items, see if you can figure out what the saving is... it could save you a packet!

How to play 4 in a row to practice
'Best price - divide by 9' for 5th grade
- Select "4 in a row" on the math games selection page.
- Take a quick look at the method text for 4 in a row.
- Click on PLAY to proceed, or change your topic with the CHANGE TOPIC button.
- On the play page you have a grid of 16 pictures (some topic picture are shown multiple times for shorter topics).
- Click on a picture cell.
- The topic question will appear along with a series of possible answers.
- Click the speaker icon to hear any particular answer (Speech enabled browsers only).
- Click the answer that corresponds to the picture question.
- If you are correct, the picture will be replaced by a tick - otherwise, a wrong sound will play.
- Continue matching picture questions to their correct answers until you have completed a line of 4 cells.
- The line can be diagonal as well as horizontal or vertical.
- 4 ticks in a row wins the game.
- Choose an option from the green sign, or click on games to choose a different game.
