UXO game to practice
'Multiply indices' for 8th grade

Multiply indices by adding powers

What are indices?

Indices are terms that have been raised to a power such as 5ā¶ or xĀ³ or 4yā“. Raised to the power means the term has been multiplied by itself that number of times.

4Ā³ = 4 x 4 x 4     and     aāµ = a x a x a x a x a

So the term indice simply means a number or term raised to a power.

How to multiply indices with the same base

In order to be able to multiply indices by adding powers, the indices must have the same base. So aĀ³ and aā¶ have the same base "a", but xĀ³ and yā¶ do not have the same base and cannot be simplified using the methods on this page.

To see why we can add powers to multiply indices with the same base, consider the expression aĀ³ x aā“. If we expand both indices we get:

(a x a x a) x (a x a x a x a) = a x a x a x a x a x a x a = aā·

So we can see that multiplying aĀ³ x aā“ gives us a multiplied by itself 7 times, which you will notice is the same as adding the powers of the two terms.

aĀ³ x aā“ = aā·

yā“ x yā“ = yāø

If one or more of the terms is raised to a negative power, you follow the standard rules of arithmetic to compute the powers through adding and taking away.

pāµ x pĀ³ x pā»Ā³ = pāµ

pā»āµ x pā“ x pā»Ā³ = pā»ā“

If there are coefficients associated with the indices, multiply the coefficients first then add the powers to simplify the expression.

6yā“ x 7yā“ = 42yāø

7pāµqĀ³ x 4pā»Ā³qĀ² = 28pĀ²qāµ

With our UXO math game you will be practicing the topic "Multiply indices" from 8th grade / Number / Powers & Roots / Powers & Roots. The math in this game consists of 16 questions that ask you to multiply indices with the same base by adding powers e.g. 5aĀ³ x 6aĀ² = 30aāµ.

UXO is a click to clear game with multiple targets at different levels

Large thumbnail for math game UXO

UXO is a fun game to learn math where you attempt to knock over all the target objects while avoiding clicking / tapping on the bombs.

After each level, win an additional 50 points by correctly answering a math question from your selected topic. Wrong answers lose you 20 points but you can answer multiple times. Each level lasts 30 seconds: if you haven't cleared all the targets in that time, you lose 50 points. High scores can be added to the UXO leaderboards.

Notes

  • This is a fast-paced game of clicking or dragging over moving targets.
  • Also suitable for tablets and mobiles (it's actually easier than with a mouse)
  • Answer math questions correctly for a higher score
  • Hit all the targets in 30 seconds or you lose points.

How to play UXO to practice
'Multiply indices' for 8th grade

Free Math Games screenshot of the UXO game for secondary

UXO is a "click to clear" game with targets to hit and bombs to avoid.

  1. In each level of UXO, hit all the target objects.
  2. You can clear targets by clicking on them or by dragging over them with the mouse down.
  3. You have 30 seconds in each level to clear the targets.
  4. There are 10 levels max in the game.
  5. In the first level there are 10 targets and 5 bombs.
  6. The number of targets increases by one in each level.
  7. You get 10 points for each target you hit.
  8. You lose 5 points for each bomb you hit.
  9. When you have hit all the targets or 30 seconds have elapsed, you get a math question from your selected topic.
  10. Answering the question correctly adds 50 points to your score.
  11. A wrong answer takes 20 points away from your score.
  12. If you get a question wrong, you can try to answer again.
  13. Your final score is a combination of your targets score minus your bombs score plus the points you get from the math questions.
  14. There is a high score leaderboard for each topic.
  15. The highest possible score for a 10 question topic is 1950.
