5th grade / Counting / Roman numerals / Numbers to Roman numerals
To convert modern day numbers between 150 and 1000 into Roman numerals, follow these steps. Break the number down into its component parts: For example, 357 can be broken down into 300, 50, and 7.
Convert each part to Roman numerals using the following table as a guide:
1000 = M
900 = CM
500 = D
400 = CD
100 = C
90 = XC
50 = L
40 = XL
10 = X
9 = IX
5 = V
4 = IV
1 = I
Write the Roman numerals in order from left to right, starting with the largest value: For example, to convert 357 to Roman numerals, we would write:
300 = CCC
50 = L
7 = VII
And then we would write the Roman numerals in order from left to right, starting with the largest value so 357 in Roman numerals is written as CCCLVII.
Here are a few more examples:
150 = CL
200 = CC
400 = CD
600 = DC
900 = CM
1000 = M
