4th grade / Place value / Identify the place value / 5-digit number: units
Each digit in a number has a specific place name and value depending on its position. In our base-10 numeral system, the place values are units, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. We read these place values of a number from right to left, starting with the units.
For example, consider the 5 digit number 48,925
To locate the units digit of a 5 digit number, look at the last digit on the right. That is the units digit, also called the "ones digit". In our example above, the units place is occupied by the number 5.
The value of the units digit is itself since we multiply it by 1. In our example above, the value of the units digit of 48,925 is:
48,925 : value of units digit : 2 x 1 = 2.
Here are some more examples of how to get the units place value of 5 digit numbers:
The value of the tens digit of 97,349 is 9
The value of the tens digit of 81,021 is 1
The value of the tens digit of 28,480 is 0
