4th grade / Percentages / Percent, fractions, decimals / Fractions to decimals
To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number).
For example, if you have the fraction 3/4, you can convert it to a decimal by dividing 3 (the numerator) by 4 (the denominator). This gives you 0.75. So 3/4 can be written as 0.75 in decimal form.
3 / 4 = 0.75
Another way to think of this is that a fraction is like a piece of a whole and a decimal is a way of showing how much of that whole the piece is. So when you divide the top number of the fraction by the bottom number of the fraction, you are breaking the piece into smaller parts and seeing how many of those smaller parts make up the whole.
If your fraction is top-heavy such as 10/4, the same principle applies - divide the numerator by the denominator to convert that fraction to a decimal:
10 / 4 = 2.5
