3rd grade / Comparing numbers / Time / 12 minutes slow
So, you have a clock that is running 12 minutes slow. That means it is always telling you a time that is 12 minutes earlier than the real time. So if it says the time is 4:30 PM the actual time is 12 minutes later which is 4:42 PM. Here are the steps to work out the correct time:
Step 1: Read the time on the slow clock. Look at the clock and read the time it's showing. Let's say the slow clock is showing 4:25 PM (twenty-five past four).
Step 2: Understand what it means for a clock to be slow. A clock that is "slow" means it's showing a time that's earlier than the actual, correct time. In our case, the clock is 12 minutes slow, which means it's showing a time that's 12 minutes earlier than the real time.
Step 3: Add the slow minutes. Now we need to add those extra 12 minutes to the time shown on the slow clock to find the correct time. Here's how we do it:
Start with the minutes on the slow clock: 25 minutes.
Add the 12 slow minutes: 25 + 12 = 37 minutes.
So the correct time is 4:37 PM or "twenty-three minutes to five".
This topic asks you to work out the correct time given that each clock is 12 minutes slow. The clocks are 12 hour clocks and the answers are given as words such as "thirteen minutes past seven".
