Game: THE FROG FLIES
Aim: Help the frog catch the flies
Method:
Use keyboard arrow keys or tap your tablet/mobile to control the frog and catch the flies. Avoid the birds! Answer the math questions to win additional points.
Scoring is based on speed, flies caught and the number of correct answers.
When you buy things you need to know how much it will cost you so that you know if you have enough money. We use addition to calculate the TOTAL cost by adding up each individual item cost. Adding money is similar to adding any other numbers in math except that if the 3 numbers together add up to more than one dollar then we need to deal with both dollars and cents.
Sometimes we are just adding the cents: Say we have 3 things that cost 22 cents each. To know the total cost, we simply add the 22 cents three times to get 66 cents. If the items cost different amounts, we can still add up those 3 amounts to get a total cost:
15Β’ + 23Β’ + 34Β’ = 72Β’.
When the total goes over one dollar, we need to get an answer in both dollars and cents. So if we add 75 cents, 75 cents and 75 cents we have a total of 225 cents but we know that 200 cents is 2 dollars, so we have 2 dollars and a remainder of 25 cents. So the sum with answer is
75Β’ + 75Β’ + 75Β’ = $2.25Β’.
With our The frog flies math game you will be practicing the topic "Total cost: 3 items" from 3rd grade / Addition / Word problems. The math in this game consists of 14 questions that ask you to use addition to find out how much the 3 items cost in total.
Topic titles:
Sometimes in math the problems are not given as numbers but as words and sentences. This doesn't mean that the math you have to do is different, but it does mean you have to work out first what the sum you are being asked to do is, and then work on the sum itself. In this set of topics, the questions are to do with adding up either the total number of items or the total cost of a set of 2 or 3 items.
When we want to understand math addition word problems, we need to read carefully through the text and create the sum that takes the number information out of the text and puts it in a sum. When we read the text "Logan has 30 Rich tea biscuits and 17 Digestives" we can see that the sum involves finding how many biscuits Logan has in total which we find by adding up the number of Rich tea biscuits and digestive biscuits. So the total number of biscuits is 30 + 17 which is 47.
When the sentences we are looking at involve money our addition sum will involve adding amounts of money rather than numbers of items. Given the text "Grace buys 3 pencils for 54Β’, 64Β’Β and 75Β’." we realise that we need to add the 3 amounts to come to the total that Grace has spent on pencils. Because that total is greater than 100Β’, the answer will be in both dollars and cents. Can you work out what that amount will be? Try the topic "Total cost of 3 items" to check your answer.
Learn or revise math with our fun interactive game THE FROG FLIES! You are a happy hungry frog in the middle of the jungle in the middle of the night. Catch the flies for your supper (and practice math just for fun).
You can play the game on tablet/mobile or desktop computer. On handheld devices you move the frog by tapping where you want it to move to. On a computer, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move.
Sometimes a big bird swoops through the forest catching unwary amphibians so stay alert and get out of the way of its beak!
Scoring is based on flies caught, questions answered and number of deaths by bird. Your final score is your total points minus your time in seconds.
The highest scores for each topic can be saved and seen by clicking on the star button, so get learning and get your frog's name up in lights!
