Game: THE BEETLE AND THE BEE

Aim: Collect the strawberries, avoid the bees

Method:
Move the beetle with the arrow keys or by tapping the screen. When the beetle catches the strawberry, you must answer the question. If you get it right you keep the strawberry and earn points.

Your final score is based on the time taken minus health lost divided by 10.

Compare the area of 2 rectangles and calculate the difference

To calculate the area of a rectangle, you multiply its width by its height. In this topic, you are asked to calculate the area of two rectangles and determine how much bigger the larger one is than the smaller one. To do so, you will need to calculate the area for both rectangles then subtract the smaller area from the larger. Your answer will be in units square.

Let's say you have 2 rectangles, one with dimensions of 5 m x 3 m and the other with dimensions 6 m x 4 m.

To calculate the area of the rectangles, multiply width by height.

The area of the first rectangle is:

Rectangle 1: Area = 5 m × 3 m = 15 m²

The area of the second rectangle is:

Rectangle 2: Area = 6 m × 4 m = 24 m²

The second rectangle has a bigger area than the first rectangle. The difference in area of the two rectangles is:

Difference in area = 24 m² - 15 m² = 9 m²

So, you can see that the second rectangle has an area 9 m² greater than the first rectangle.


This topic asks you to calculate the area of two rectangles and work out the difference in size. Your answers should be in square units such as square centimeters (cm²) or square meters (m²).

The beetle is hungry and sees the tasty strawberry but the angry bee wants to sting it...

  1. Choose "The beetle and the bee" from the games selection page.
  2. When you start the game you are in the first level of a simple maze.
  3. You are the beetle and you want to eat the strawberry but there is a bee who will try to sting you.
  4. Each time the bee stings you, you lose a little of your life.
  5. Use your keyboard's arrows or tap the screen to move the beetle.
  6. Move the beetle around the obstacles avoiding the bee and get to the strawberry.
  7. When you catch a strawberry, you will get a math question from your selected topic.
  8. Select or enter the correct answer.
  9. If you are right you win the strawberry - now you must get back to the swirly "portal" at the top right of the screen.
  10. Entering the portal takes you to the next level of the maze.
  11. The game gets harder after the first 5 levels - now there are 2 bees trying to sting you...
  12. You need to complete all the levels without dying of bee stings to win.
  13. Your final score is your time taken minus your remaining health divided by 10.
