Sometimes in math the sums are not given to you as numbers in columns, but as words and sentences. This doesn't mean that the math you have to do is different, but it does mean you have to work out first what the sum you are being asked to do is, and then work on the sum itself. In this set of topics, the questions are to do with adding up either the total number of items or the total cost of a set number of items.
When we want to understand math problems in sentences, we need to read carefully through the sentence and create a sum that takes the number information out of the sentence and puts it in a sum. For instance, in the sentence "Jack has 6 apples and Jill has 12 apples." we can see that the things we are interested in are the apples, and the numbers we need to sum are 6 and 12. So, to get the total number of APPLES, we add up the 6 (that Jack has) and the 12 (the number of apples that Jill has). Written as a sum this will be
6 + 12 = 18
So we can say that the number of apples that Jack and Jill have is 18.
When the sentences we are looking at involve money, we have a similar situation, but our addition sum will involve adding amounts of money rather than numbers of items. Sometimes this is easy. Say we have 2 things that cost 12 cents each. To know the total cost, we simply add the 12 twice to get 24 cents. If the 2 items cost different amounts, we can still add up those 2 amounts to get a total cost. For 3 items, the idea is the same.
Sow grow is a gentle game that concentrates on your ability to answer math questions. The game itself is very simple to play and does not require manual dexterity or fast reaction times. You are growing sunflowers in pots on a window sill. When you answer questions correctly you get to pick a sunflower to put in the vase. When the vase is full, you have completed the game.

- Sow grow is a one player game to learn or revise math.
- Sow grow is a timed game - play a few times, set a personal best time and try to get on the leaderboard!
- It is best to go through the sample questions in the topic lesson before you attempt this game.

How to play Sow grow to practice
'Total number of items' for 2nd grade
- Select the Sow grow game from the "Games" selection page.
- On the settings page there are brief instructions on how to play.
- Click on PLAY to start the game.
- The game is timed - the clock starts when you enter the play screen.
- The first seeds are planted then the first math question is revealed above the pots.
- If you have robot speech enabled, the robot voice will speak the question.
- Click / tap on the speaker button at top right if you want to hear the audio repeated.
- Click / tap on the question box to expand the question and hear the audio repeated.
- Click / tap on the pot that correctly answers the question.
- If your answer is correct the seedling will grow into a flower which is then cut and put in the vase.
- If your answer is wrong, the audio will play again, and an arrow will indicate the correct answer. Click the close button at top right to continue.
- The number of questions you need to answer is in the count box at top right above the clock.
- There are occasional "flower bonuses" available which will take 5 seconds off your time.
- A leaderboard records the 10 fastest times for each topic. Click the gold star on the vase to see the leaderboard.
- If you get one of the 10 fastest times, you are offered the chance to enter your name into the leaderboard, or you can cancel if you are not interested.
