Game: ROCK FALL
Aim: Smash all the falling rocks
Method:
Click / tap on each falling rock. Answer the question in the box as quickly as you can.
There are only 4 questions in this game so it is quite short... if you can get those rocks!
Your final score is based on number of questions answered right / wrong, and the time taken.
5th grade / Multiply + Divide / Money and people / Fractions of groups or money
This topic is intended to help you learn or revise how to calculate a fraction of an integer. This type of calculation has many real-world applications like working out your portion of a restaurant bill or other shared cost.
So, if you needed to calculate β of $32, you could start by working out what β of 32 is, and multiply that number by 5. So,
β of 32 is equivalent to 32 / 8 = 4 and ...
5 x 4 = 20 so ...
β of $32 = ( 32 Γ· 8 ) x 5 = $20
As another example, in the first question from the lesson you are asked to calculate β of 40 students. There are many ways to work this out, but one way is:
(40 x 2) Γ· 5
Since 40 is divisible by 5 we could cross-cancel first which gives us:
(8 x 2) Γ· 1
So we can see that β of 40 students is 16 students.
Use a slow game like 4 in a row to practice this topic first, then when you get into a timed game like Pong, you will have had enough practice to be able to work out the questions really fast!
With our Rock fall math game you will be practicing the topic "Fractions of groups or money" from 5th grade / Multiply + Divide / Money and people. The math in this game consists of 16 questions that ask you to find fractions of groups or money by first dividing or cross-cancelling and then multiplying.
ROCK FALL is based on the road traffic warning sign for falling rocks - a sign that seems a bit less useful than somebody getting up there on that cliff and actually doing something about it... Anyway, the rocks are falling and it is your job to stop them hitting the road below, or at least stopping them hitting the road below too many times and breaking it. Smash the rocks by clicking or tapping on them (not so easy in real life of course) - they will turn into snowflakes and float gently down into nothing.
There are 4 rocks to stop and not much time to do it (if you want to get a good score and get on the leaderboard). This game is fun and fast and requires good reflexes and a good strategy. Plan to break the smaller rocks first if you want a good score because the rocks fall faster as the game progresses. It also helps to decide where on their path you plan to click / tap the rocks.
