Aim: Drag question blocks to answer boxes
Method:
Drag the question block over the right answer box to tidy up the play room. Points are added and taken away automatically.
Click the answer boxes to hear the answer for each box. You must answer 5 questions correctly to complete the game
3rd grade / Addition / Word problems / Total number of items
When you have lots of similar things you might want to know how many of those things you have in total.
That is the idea behind this topic - say you have 56 red marbles, 22 blue marbles but only 9 yellow marbles. How many marbles do you have in total? Easy right? Add up the numbers of different types of marbles to get the toal number.
56 + 22 + 9 = 87 marbles
So, this topic gives you different scenarios where a person wants to know the total number of items they have and you have to work out the answer.
With our Mix and match math game you will be practicing the topic "Total number of items" from 3rd grade / Addition / Word problems. The math in this game consists of 11 questions that ask you to use addition to find out how many items each person has in total.
Topic titles:
Sometimes in math the problems are not given as numbers but as words and sentences. This doesn't mean that the math you have to do is different, but it does mean you have to work out first what the sum you are being asked to do is, and then work on the sum itself. In this set of topics, the questions are to do with adding up either the total number of items or the total cost of a set of 2 or 3 items.
When we want to understand math addition word problems, we need to read carefully through the text and create the sum that takes the number information out of the text and puts it in a sum. When we read the text "Logan has 30 Rich tea biscuits and 17 Digestives" we can see that the sum involves finding how many biscuits Logan has in total which we find by adding up the number of Rich tea biscuits and digestive biscuits. So the total number of biscuits is 30 + 17 which is 47.
When the sentences we are looking at involve money our addition sum will involve adding amounts of money rather than numbers of items. Given the text "Grace buys 3 pencils for 54¢, 64¢ and 75¢." we realise that we need to add the 3 amounts to come to the total that Grace has spent on pencils. Because that total is greater than 100¢, the answer will be in both dollars and cents. Can you work out what that amount will be? Try the topic "Total cost of 3 items" to check your answer.
In this game we are in a room with lots of toys - and the room needs clearing up - you need to put the play blocks back in the right boxes to tidy the room and win the game...but which is the right box for each block? Well, you can work that out by comparing the question on the block with the math answer on each of the boxes - you should drag the question block into the box whose math answer matches the picture question.
You can listen to the spoken math answer by clicking on the individual boxes. There are 5 blocks to clear up - but if you put them in the wrong boxes, there will be more... Anyway, tidy is good and practicing math is better so start now and see how you get on...
This game reinforces the math you learned or revised in the lesson by asking you to match each question to the correct answer. If you are older you may not like the childish reference to toys, but don't worry - there are other games to play, and who knows - you might like a trip down memory lane?
UXO * Duck shoot * The frog flies * Pong * Cat and mouse * The beetle and the bee
Rock fall * Four in a row * Sow grow * Choose or lose * Mix and match
There are 5 blocks that need putting away to tidy the play room. Drag (they are heavy...) the blocks to the correct boxes.
