Choose the biggest or smallest number in groups of numbers from 1 and 20
Home / Kindergarten / Comparing numbers / Biggest smallest 1-20 / Biggest or smallest number to 20
In this topic you are asked to look at a group of four numbers and decide wich number is the biggest or the smallest. There are four numbers in each group, and the numbers can be as small as 1 and as big as 20. In the second question, you have the group of numbers :
6, 8, 4, 10
Start by looking at the number of digits for each number - one of the numbers has 2 digits (the number 10) but the other three only have one. We know that a 2 digit number like 10 or 12 is bigger than the biggest one digit number which is 9. So, if we are looking for the biggest number we can say straight away that 10 is the biggest number.
If we are looking for the smallest number, we need to compare the three numbers with only one digit, 6, 8 and 4. We know that 4 is a smaller number than 6 and 8 so 4 is the smallest number in the group. So we can say :
10 is the biggest number
4 is the smallest number
In another question from the topic you are shown the following group of numbers :
17, 7, 18, 11
So we use the same technique as last time and look at the number of digits for each number in that list. You will see that one of them has only one digit (the 7), so that must be the smallest number in the group.
There are three numbers in the group that have two digits and start with a 1, so compare their second digit. They are 7, 8 and 1. We know that 8 is bigger than 7 or 1 so the biggest number in the group has to be 18. So we can say :
7 is the smallest number
18 is the biggest number
