Express one quantity as a percentage of another
Home / 7th grade / Number / Percentages / Express quantities as percentages
To express one quantity as a percentage of another quantity, follow these steps:
Step 1:
Divide the quantity you want to express as a percentage by the total quantity.
For example, if you have 20 apples and you want to express 5 of them as a percentage of the total 20, you would divide 5 by 20: 5/20 = 0.25.
Step 2:
Multiply the result by 100 to get the percentage.
In the example above, 0.25 multiplied by 100 equals 25. Therefore, 5 apples is 25% of 20 apples.
Step 3:
Write the answer in the correct form, including the percent sign.
In the example above, the answer would be: "5 apples is 25% of 20 apples."
So, to express one quantity as a percentage of another quantity, you need to divide the quantity you want to express by the total quantity, then multiply by 100 and add the percent sign.
