÷ 10

Divide by 10
for 4th grade

Use mental calculations to divide numbers up to 10,000 by 10

Mental method to divide by 10

To divide by 10, all you have to do is move the decimal point one place to the left. The number gets smaller because you're splitting it into ten equal parts. Let's see this technique in action with some examples:

Divide 50 by 10

50 has no decimal point, so imagine there is one right after the last digit: 50.0

Now, move the decimal point one place to the left: 50.0 becomes 5.00

That's it: 50 ÷ 10 = 5

Divide 165 by 10

165 has no decimal point, so imagine there is one right after the last digit: 165.0

Now, move the decimal point one place to the left: 165.0 becomes 16.50

So 165 ÷ 10 = 16.5

Remember, when you divide by 10, you are sharing the number into ten equal parts. That means the number gets smaller. So the answer to a division should always be a smaller number than the starting number.

Divide 6.32 by 10

So, move the decimal point one place to the left: 6.32 becomes 0.632

6.32 ÷ 10 = 0.632

This topic asks you to calculate division by 10 for each given number. The numbers to divide range from 10 up to 10,000.
