Multiply then add
for 2nd grade

Work out the answer when you multiply first and then add

2nd grade : Number machine : multiply then add

A number machine is a way of doing 2 or more different sums on a single input. In this topic you will be multiplying a given number by another number first, then taking the answer from that and adding some other number to it. This is called a 2 step calculation. In the first question you are asked to take 2, multiply it by 2, then add 4 to the answer. In the second question you are asked to take 4, multiply it by 5, then add 3 to the answer.

  1. Start with a number
  2. Multiply it by a number in the machine
  3. Take that answer and add another machine number to it

Start with 4, multiply by 5 then add 3

4 x 5 = 20

20 + 3 = 23

So 4 x 5 + 3 = 23

Start with 6, multiply by 5 then add 11

Start with 6

Multiply by 5 : 6 x 5 = 30

Add 11 : 30 + 11 = 41

So 6 x 5 + 11 = 41
