Identify unit fractions: fractions where the top number is a one e.g. ½ and ⅓
Home / 2nd grade / Fractions / Name fractions / Identify unit fractions
A unit fraction is the name given to a fraction where the "numerator" (that is the top number of the fraction) is 1 and the "denominator" (the bottom number of the fraction) is a whole number like 2 or 7 or 11.
So ½ is a unit fraction and so is ¼ and ⅓ but ⅖ is not because the number on the top of the fraction (the numerator) is 2 and unit fractions have a one on the top.
Other examples of unit fractions are ⅙ (one sixth), ⅐ (one seventh) and ⅛ (one eighth).
