Kindergarten / Addition / Adding numbers / Add single-digit numbers
When you add 2 numbers together, what you are doing is taking the first number then counting up from that number as many ones as are in the second number.
So if we wanted to add 4 plus 3, we start with 4, then count up to 5, then to 6, and finally to 7, which is 3 more than 4. Adding numbers always makes a new number that is bigger than either of the numbers that you are adding. That new number is the first number and the second number put together.
If you think about toys: you count your toy cars - say you have 3. Then you count your teddy bears - say you have 2. To know how many cars and teddy bears you have, you count up from 3 another 2 times which gives you the answer 5. So you can say that you have 5 cars and bears.
