7th grade / Number / Percentages / Fractions decimals percent / Fractions and percentages
In this topic you are asked to compare a fraction to a percentage by converting them to decimals to decide which is bigger.
In the first question you are given the fraction 1/2 and the percentage 20%. If we convert these to decimals we get
1/2 = 0.5 and 20% = 0.2
So we can see that 1/2 is a greater proportion than 20%.
In the second question we are given the fraction 1/5 and the percentage 50% (which is nearly an exact reversal of the first question). Converting these to decimals we have:
1/5 = 0.2 and 50% = 0.5
So we can see that 50% is a greater proportion than 1/5
