5th grade / Multiply + Divide / Money and people / Calculate the unit cost
The idea of unit cost is really quite simple. Items purchased in bulk (more than 1 unit) cost a certain amount in total. The unit cost is simply how much each individaul one of those items cost.
So, to calculate the unit cost of an item given the cost of a bulk purchase, divide the total cost by the number of items purchased.
So, if Cathy buys 100 books for $200, the unit cost of each book is:
$200 ÷ 100 = $2
Another example: Bill buys 20 pens for $10. What is the unit cost of each pen?
$10 ÷ 20 = $0.5 or 50¢
