5th grade / Add + Subtract / Add 109, 119, 129 / Add 119 to a multiple of 10
When you add to a large number, you can use simple tricks to help you. This is especially so when the large number's unit value is a 9 or a 1.
To add 119 to a multiple of 10, you can follow these steps.
For example, let's say you want to add 119 to 60.
Add 100 to 60: 60 + 100 = 160
Add 20 to 160: 160 + 20 = 180
Subtract 1 from 180: 180 - 1 = 179
Therefore 119 plus 60 is 179.
