5th grade / Add + Subtract / Add 109, 119, 129 / Add 109 to a multiple of 10
When you add to a large number, you can use simple tricks to help you. This is especially so when the large number's unit value is a 9 or a 1.
When adding 109, it is often easier to first add 110, and then subtract 1 to more easily get the answer.
For instance, if you wanted to do the sum: 70 + 109
1. 70 + 110 = 180 --first add 110
2. 180 - 1 = 179 --then subtract 1
You can use a similar technique whenever the large number's unit value is 9 (or 1 in which case you add rather than subtract as the second step).
