4th grade / Fractions / Fractions of amounts / Two fifths of an amount
Calculating fractions of amounts means doing a bit of multiplication and a bit of division. The sum :
⅖ of 60
can be thought of as
2 x 60 ÷ 5
and because we know that order of operations for multiplication and division are equal, we could also think of it as
60 ÷ 5 x 2
Now all we have to do is compute :
2 x 60 ÷ 5 = 24
⅖ of 120
120 ÷ 5 x 2 = 48
