1st grade / Comparing numbers / Biggest and smallest / Smallest number: 50 - 100
In this topic you are asked to look at a group of numbers and decide which number is the smallest. There are 6 numbers in each group, and each number is between 50 and 100. In the first question, you have the following group of numbers :
66, 71, 79, 86, 77, 69
Start by looking at the first digit of each number - they are 6, 7, 7, 8, 7 and 6. So, if two numbers have the same number of digits, then the number with the smaller first digit is the smaller number. We can see that we have two numbers with a 6 as the first digit, 66 and 69, and that the other numbers have bigger first digits so one of those starting with 6 has to be the smallest number in the group. Looking at the second digit, it is clear that 6 is smaller than 9 so in this group the smallest number has to be :
Smallest number = 66
In another question from the topic you are asked to find the smallest number from the following group of numbers :
63, 87, 83, 62, 80, 68
So we use the same technique as last time and look at the first digit of each number in that list. You will see that three of them have 6 as a first digit and three of them have 8, so those starting with 8 cannot be the smallest number in the group.
There are three numbers in the list that start with a 6, so compare their second digit. They are 3, 2 and 8. We know that 2 is smaller than 3 or 8 so the smallest number in the list has to be :
Smallest number = 62
With our Four in a row math game you will be practicing the topic "Smallest number: 50 - 100" from 1st grade / Comparing numbers / Biggest and smallest. The math in this game consists of 16 questions that ask you to choose the smallest of a group of numbers between 50 and 100.
