4th grade / Fractions / Convert fractions / Top-heavy fractions to mixed fractions
It is often useful to be able to convert between so called top-heavy or "vulgar" fractions (that is, fractions where the numerator is greater than the denominator) and mixed fractions (a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction).
Examples of top-heavy fractions are:
Examples of mixed fractions are:
7¼ 9½ 21¾
To convert from a top-heavy fraction to a mixed fraction, divide the numerator of the fraction by the denominator to get the whole number part, use the remainder as the numerator of the fraction part, and the denominator of the top-heavy fraction becomes the denominator of the fraction part.
9/4 = 2 + 1/4 = 2¼
