2nd grade / Multiplication / Number facts / Multiply decimals by 10: move the point
Multiplying a unit by 10 moves it in to the tens column. Multiplying a ten by 10 moves it in to the hundreds column. Something similar happens when you multiply a decimal number by 10. The unit number is shifted 1 place to the left into the tens column, so the decimal point moves 1 place to the right.
So if the original number is 3.3, the unit 3 becomes 3 tens, the 0.3 becomes the unit 3, and so the answer is 33, which, as you can see, is the same as moving the decimal point 1 place to the right!
It doesn't matter how many numbers are in front of or behind the decimal point, you can still simply move that decimal point 1 place to the right. So 123.456 x 10 is 1234.56 and 0.001 x 10 is 0.01 - it is a really easy rule for multiplying by 10.
