'3D shapes: name from diagram' for 3rd grade

Identify 3-dimensional shapes from diagrams

This topic helps you learn the names of many 3D shapes. The shapes in the topic are described below

  1. Sphere: A sphere is a round shape that looks like a ball. It is completely symmetrical, which means that every part of it looks the same. Examples of spheres include a tennis ball or the Earth (nearly).
  2. Cylinder: A cylinder is a shape that is shaped like a tin can. It has two flat, circular faces (called bases) that are the same size, and a curved body that connects the two bases. Examples of cylinders include a can of soup or a paper towel roll.
  3. Cone: A cone is a shape that looks like an ice cream cone or a party hat. It has a round base that connects to a point at the top. The sides of the cone slant inwards as they go up. Examples of cones include a traffic cone or a party hat.
  4. Triangular Prism: A triangular prism is a shape that has two triangular faces and three rectangular faces. It looks like a triangle that has been stretched out. Examples of triangular prisms include the Toblerone chocolate bar or the old type of tent.
  5. Square based pyramid: A square based pyramid is like the Great Pyramid of Giza or a pyramid-shaped cake. It has a square base and four triangular faces that meet at a point (called the apex) at the top.
  6. Cube: A cube is like a Rubik's Cube or a six-sided dice. It has six square faces that are the same size. The edges where the faces meet are also all the same length.
  7. Cuboid: A cuboid is like a cereal box or a brick. It has six rectangular faces like a cube but unlike the cube, the faces can be different sizes.

This topic shows you diagrams of different 3D shapes and you have to name them correctly. You may have noticed that the cube is a special type of cuboid where all the faces are the same sized square. This is true for a few of the shapes in this toic. You should always go with the most specific name, so if it is a cube go with cube even though cuboid is also technically correct.

With our Cat and mouse math game you will be practicing the topic "3D shapes: name from diagram" from 3rd grade / Shapes / Identifying shapes. The math in this game consists of 20 questions that ask you to identify the names of these three-dimensional (3D) shapes in various orientations.

Move the cat to catch the white mice, hit the blue balloons, but avoid the red ones

Large thumbnail for math game Cat and mouse

Cat versus mouse game with added balloons for math and fun. You are the ginger cat, and your life is being made a misery by some white mice which have come into the house and are proving hard to catch. Not to mention there is a mouse house party going on and lots of balloons getting in the way of your hunting.

So you have to catch the white mice, forget about the gray mice, hit the blue balloons but avoid the red balloons, and answer math questions (you are a CLEVER cat...). If it sounds complicated and a bit frantic, that's because it is. Do your best but don't worry if you can't catch all the mice - neither can we. It's a cat's life...

CAT AND MOUSE is a quirky take on the perennial enmity of ponderous predator and plucky prey. Here are the basics:

  1. Press "PLAY" on the CAT AND MOUSE settings page to open the game.
  2. You are a ginger cat overwhelmed by a serious mouse problem.
  3. Luckily your job is only to catch the white mice, not all the mice.
  4. Trouble is, they are not easy to catch and will try to avoid you.
  5. Use the arrow keys or tap the screen in the direction you want the cat to go.
  6. You will need fast reaction times to catch those white mice, and the balloons keep getting in the way.
  7. Mouse scores are 25 points for each white mouse caught, minus 5 points for each white mouse that escapes.
  8. When you do catch a white mouse, a math question will appear.
  9. Answer the math question correctly for those extra points...
  10. You get 50 points for each correct answer, but you lose 25 points for each wrong answer.
  11. Hitting blue balloons gives you extra points, but 3 hits on a balloon will burst it for that level.
  12. Hitting red balloons takes away points.
  13. Balloon scores are +5 or +10 points for blue balloons, -5 or -10 points for red balloons.
  14. This is a timed game and your final score is calculated by taking away your time in seconds from the points you have earned.
  15. If you get one of the 10 best scores you can add your name to the leaderboard for your chosen topic.
