Our Fractions topics for 1st grade expand on the concepts of half and quarter introduced last year. Pupils encounter ⅓, ¼, ¾ and 2/4 for the first time as lengths, shapes or quantities. Pupils use fractions of discrete and continuous quantities to solve problems.

Pupils are requested to name the fractions of the sub-divided shapes that are red. - Fractions of things
Pupils select shapes with shaded sections that represent half, quarter or three-quarters of the whole. - Fractions of numbers
Pupils use their knowledge of fractions to work out half, quarter or a third of simple numbers. - Number line
Number lines of halves, quarters and thirds are introduced using missing number problems.
